Performance Artists: Preparing your performance

Artomatic 419 Lite is about creating interesting, multi-dimensional art that is engaging to a variety of people on a number of levels. And remember, the most creative submissions will receive the most attention from the selection committee. Toledoans have access to a variety of live music and theatre performances on any given night. So, ask yourself and/or your group - What could you do that would be different? Spend some time crafting a performance that will stand out in the minds of viewers. Think about collaborations with other groups or performers that might compliment or enhance your own style. Remember that performance includes a variety of mediums, such as music, theatre, poetry, dance, contortion, sword-swallowing, hypnosis, storytelling and all sort of other stuff. Could any of these things work with what you do? If you have a concept but need help making some connections, contact an Artomatic 419 Lite Committee Member for ideas or contacts at http://www.kickstarttoledo.com/public.

Some things to remember:
- Fort Industry Square is a historic, classy building, so be mindful of the space.
- The building also wasn't designed for concerts or performances, so sound bleeding between rooms and acoustics could become an issue.
- There are a variety of spaces available, from clean and polished woodwork to raw, industrial-esque space and stone-walled basement-type areas. Rooms with lots of natural light and rooms with very little. Which would suit your style best?
- Performers will assume all costs of their productions, this includes staging, PAs and soundsystems, etc.
- Many performances will be featured over the course of the weekend, so timely load in, load out, set up and tear down will be a must.
- Content of the performance will be vital in selection. As with the visual arts, a PG-13 rating is the limit. Artomatic 419 Lite is a family-friendly event meant to encourage awareness of the arts, not scare people away. What does this mean? Pure shock value won't hold much weight here. Spend time contemplating the meaning of the content, words and lyrics of your performance. Is it engaging and thought provoking? Does it make a comment that is widely accessible? How important is the controversial material (if any) to the overall feel and theme of the piece?
